Interview

LA QUIETE

Dimanche 6 août 2006

1.Hello boys. LA QUIETE is actually quite well known worldwide. You've released stuff everywhere, and toured many places. But actually, to introduce the band to the Belgian audiance can you make the discography of the band. And present the band members?

angelino: well, we're five kids, me (angelo), fulvio, rocco, michele and cebio. i play bass in the band and what actually makes me stressed is university (semiothic) and the wish of being a good graphic designer. fulvio is our singer and he is a computer science engineer, he's really able with computers and he is the best cook i've ever met (note by fulvio: a part from his mother! not offensively, its true!), rocco plays guitar and he's into music, everykind of music, he's the best musician of the band, yes, the only one. eheh... michele plays drums, he's addicted to "lost" (the serial) and he is the only one that plays in other bands (contrasto). cebio plays guitar and he's an hard worker, he was a bricklayer, a clerk and we'll see what he will come out with next time.

2.I actually saw you once in Summerslam Festival 2004. The show was for me awesome and blew me away.In that time I only knew the split with ACRIMONIE (and maybe something else) I gues. You kind of share a positive, passionate and festive mood. How do you manage to create such atmosphere. Everyone was nuts and around you on the stage screaming and clapping hands.

angelino: well, i remember that show. every little detail is impressed in my mind. our attitude, our mood, is the result of how much we love each others. Sometimes we succeed in showing it, that's our goal, communicate, have fun.

3.If I remember well you are/were two singers. Why? It's kind of unusual in this screamo DIY scene? Was it just a choice because you were a group of friends who wanted to make the band?

angelino: well the band started with an other line up, actually me and fulvio joined la quiete just two years ago. i don't know why my bandmates decided to go for the second singer but i would say that it was because of friendship. than boris left, and we're five again.

4.You sing in Italian which is quite great. Wasn't it hard in the begining to share your feelings and opinion with non-Italian people?

angelino: you know what? i've always been impressed of how much in the hardcore scene people cares about lyrics, so we've always translated ours. sometimes we still receive e-mails with questions regarding what we write in our songs. so i would say no. our language has never been a problem.

5.I witness in the lyrics some well poetical writings. Those texts are personal, and sometimes with ideas to share. From where come the ideas and feelings to write? Is it a need? What does influence you?

angelino: i think it's all about what we do, about the people we meet and the ones we've lost. our lyrics are really personal, it also happened that I've waited for months before asking what a lyric means to the bandmate who wrote it. yeah! we 're all soooo sensitive! this cruel world does not deserve our sweet words

6.I realized with time passing by that the band likes more and more instrumental parts. Sometimes almost accoustic. Why? Are you big fan of postrock?

angelino: uhm...let me think...all of us listens to a lot of things, postrock it's definitely on the list but personally, i won't say i'm a big fan, i mean, i love it, but if i should call myself a "big fan" i would do it for bands like dropdead! or doom at least! ok, i'm just kidding..maybe i'm not. well, i pass.
fulvio: i'n not a big fan too... i love anticon stuff... next release will be experimental hip hop... post rock people are sad (post rock people, don't mind, but if you do... you are!)... i was when i was convincing myself i was it! but it's definitely not my way! let's make noise!

7.For you what is DIY? What does it represent for you? What does it brings to you?

angelino: DIY is a really good and positive approach to life. it's not that easy, but it works! sometimes i feel more confortable with CYDIFM (could you do it for me), but when i think of all the good connections and all the good friends i made in the DIY conspiracy (yes, i'm one of those who likes to call it like this) i think that it's the best attitude i could imagine. i also think that is the best scenario for creativity, because of its true potential.

8.Actually Italy switch its politcal government from Right to Left. How do you live it from the inside? What do you think of all of this?

angelino: we were just waiting for it. now we just hope we'll have a chance to be more respectable and maybe one day we'll forget about all those bad dreams we had about that man, how was he called? ber... berlusco.. uhm.. nooo, forget it
fulvio: a never ending nightmare... and the craziest thing is that 9 million who voted for him again apparently still didn't learn the lesson... definitely blind, far and disinterested by the overwhelming problems the country was afflicted by... we have been eye-witnesses of a progressive prevarication of collective and national interests by self-interests of few... berlusconi government WAS strong with weak and weak with strong, by feeding the interests of the richest and most influential bourgeoisie... it was the government of triumphal great works, words, hidden truths, occult power altars without any kind of regard for the building of a strong and equal social state... it was ridicolous the gap between the situation of the country that the government was depicting in comparison of what REAL people was experiencing over their skins... things couldn't change with the new government... although my expectations are very high, especially concerning a new strongly laic politic for the social state, university, research, gay rights,
immigration and fighting against corruption and fiscal evasion...

9.Italy also experience a big income of people from Third World, dreaming of a fantastic golden Europe, dreaming of a country in peace. Still they have no rights and are violently sent back home. And still we experience all around us racist feelings against those people because of the famous «insecurity feeling». How doyou witness this around you? What's your opinion on those poor people? Do you see an increase of racism in Italy?

angelino: well, i don't know if it had increased in time but there is still a lot of racist shit around. i'ts mostly due to ignorance and fear but sometimes it seems to be something stuck in people's culture. especially in the norhtern areas of italy. the newest shit we have is called CPT and it stands for "temporary permanence center" that translated in a realistic language means: JAIL if you're without documents or visa you'll be sent to jail without a real reason. and people all around like to think that it's a way to help you. it's never easy to talk about possible solutions to solve "problems" but i think the actual ones are not the best. not at all.

10.I've seen taht in Italy a lot of DIY coproduction are made. Many labels teaming up together to release a disc. And many bands, labels, people helping each other. Is it as good as it seems to be from the outside? Is the DIY scene big? Does Cebio still do Life Of Hate Records?

Fulvio: Damn, he doesn't anymore... yep, it'a a pity, but DIY shouldn't be a stressing business... you do it if you want it, whenever, wherever, whom you want with! concerning diy in our country... it's in the mouths of everyone the perception that the community is decreasing, especially attitudes and purposes... maybe it's just a temporary state... there are so many very active local realities , setting up many gigs, releasing many co-produced stuff... we all know each other and the whole atmosphere is very exciting! no competition, no grudges (mmm i hope!)... as it should be! yes, "co-production" is as good as it seems from the outside! money often lacks and i can't see anything better than two labels joining their efforts to release a vinyl or a cd!

11.What brings you in hardcore? Which bands brought you into this? Which zines? Tell us and don't be afraid, we all have listen bad and good bands.

fulvio: now the questions that make you feel old and outdated ehehe! and maybe that's true...almost ten years passed when i listed my firts tapes... and yes, i'm still in love with the first bands i listened
when i was at college! like descendents, jawbreaker, green day, snfu, evergreen, minor threat... i spent almost one year listening to awful metal hardcore bands... damn, now i realize it was terrible! i got into screamo/crust/emoviolence-like stuff when i was 19/20 years old with classic bands like pg99, orchid, his hero his gone, reversal of man, racebannon... in that period two wonderful realities came up in my city, Atlantide and XM24, two very active squats... and that's where i met some of the best people of my life, including all the other laQ, the guys from raein and so on...

12.Were you expecting all those big things happening to the band when you first started the band? You released many records, toured a lot, met a lot of people. You reached the top place next to the best ones. What are your feelings? Best memories? What will you tell later to your childs and grand-childs when getting older?

now you really make me feel old! we're men who don't want to grow up... i don't want! i'm joking but there are some aspects from adult life, or better, from ordinary adult life which i observe in my "colleagues" at university which hardcore/punk/diy/whatever preserves me from... the best thing i love in laQ is that everything we do together, we do it with a naturalness and directness as if we were eternal 15 years old... and that's what really saves me from the anxiety of my future... yes i'm a computer engineer, my destiny perhaps will be behind a screen, for ten hours a day, in a very stressing and competitive environment! best memories? everything... when we tour my brain is in "capture mode on"... yes, exactly like when you set up the wifi card of your laptop and try to intercept every tcp/ip packet from an access point to do air cracking! ehehe

13.It tooks me months, then years to finally take my pen and write you an interview. I finally mad eit, and hope it pleases you. And if by chances you wanna come to North and cross Belgium, I'll be happy to make you play my town. Just one more stupid question: do you prefer emoviolence or limbo violence? The final words are for you.

fulvio: sex and violence? do you remember that awful techno-punk-rave song? strange memories... it was almost 10 years ago! yep, limbo is much better than emo! why did it take so long to write us?!? making fun! of course it pleases! take care! kisses!
